Basic Guide to Eliminate your Debt

Getting out of significant debt is usually a combination of reducing costs, increasing income, and having a clear repayment plan. If the debt feels overwhelming, you don't have to solve it all at once—breaking it into manageable steps can make progress more realistic.

Here are some practical steps:

1. List every debt.

Write down:

Who you owe

The total balance

The interest rate

The minimum monthly payment

The due date

2. Create a basic budget.

Compare your monthly income to your essential expenses (housing, food, utilities, transportation). Identify where you can temporarily reduce spending to free up money for debt payments.

Keep making at least the minimum payments. This helps you avoid additional fees and damage to your credit where applicable.

3. Choose a repayment strategy.

Debt avalanche: Pay extra toward the debt with the highest interest rate while making minimum payments on the others. This typically minimizes the total interest you pay.

Debt snowball: Pay extra toward the smallest balance first. Eliminating individual debts quickly can help some people stay motivated.

4. Talk to your creditors.

If you're struggling to make payments, ask whether they can offer:

Lower interest rates

A temporary hardship program

A revised payment plan

5. Look for ways to increase income.

Consider overtime, freelance work, part-time jobs, selling items you no longer need, or developing a skill that can generate additional earnings.

6. Avoid taking on new high-interest debt.

If possible, stop using credit cards or other expensive forms of borrowing while you're paying down existing balances.

If your debts are so large that you can't realistically meet the minimum payments, it may be worth speaking with a reputable nonprofit credit counseling service or a qualified financial adviser. They can help you review your finances and discuss options such as a debt management plan or, depending on your country's laws and your circumstances, other forms of debt relief.
