Things to Prepare when Traveling with your Pet


Traveling with your pet can be enjoyable if you prepare ahead. The things you need depend on whether you are traveling by car, public transport, airplane, or going to another country, but these are the basics:


1. Health and documents


Before traveling:


✅ Visit your veterinarian

✅ Make sure vaccinations are updated

✅ Bring the following documents:


Vaccination records

Health certificate (if required)

Medication list (if your dog takes any)

Vet contact information


Also make sure your dog has:


A collar with an ID tag

Updated microchip information (if available)


2. Food and water supplies


Bring enough pet food for the whole trip and other their supplies such as:


Treats

Food bowl

Water bowl

Fresh water

Measuring cup (if your dog has a strict diet)


Avoid changing your pet food right before traveling because it may cause stomach problems.


3. Comfort items


Pack familiar items to help them feel secure:


Blanket or bed

Favorite toy

Chew toys

Towel


A piece of clothing with your scent



4. Safety equipment


Bring:


Leash and harness/collar

Extra leash

Travel crate or carrier (if needed)

Seat belt attachment for car travel

Waste bags

First-aid supplies


5. Prepare your them before the trip


Before a long trip:


Practice short trips first.

Let them get used to the carrier or car.

Reward calm behavior.

Avoid feeding a large meal right before travel to reduce motion sickness.



6. During car travel


For safety:

✅ Keep your pet secured with a crate or seat belt.

✅ Take breaks for water, stretching, and potty needs.

✅ Never leave them alone in a parked car, especially in hot weather.

8. Check your destination


Before leaving, confirm:


  • Are pets allowed?
  • Is there a nearby veterinarian?
  • Are there pet rules or restrictions?
  • Is the area safe for walking?




Extra tips

  • Keep your pet’s normal routine as much as possible.
  • Give bathroom breaks before and during travel.
  • Stay calm—dogs often sense their owner’s stress.
  • Bring patience; new places can be overwhelming for some pets.
