Tricks to Make your Picky Eater dog Eats
If your dog is a picky eater, the goal is to figure out whether it's a preference, a learned behavior, or a medical issue. Here are some approaches that often help:
1. Rule out health problems.
If your dog has suddenly become picky, is losing weight, vomiting, has diarrhea, or seems lethargic, schedule a veterinary exam. Dental pain, digestive issues, and other illnesses can reduce appetite.
2. Stick to a feeding schedule.
Offer food for about 15–20 minutes, then remove it if your dog doesn't eat. Offer the next meal at the regular time instead of leaving food out all day.
3. Limit treats and table scraps.
Dogs that fill up on treats or human food are often less interested in their regular meals.
4. Make the food more appealing.
You can try:
- Adding a little warm water or low-sodium dog-safe broth.
- Slightly warming wet food to enhance the aroma.
- Mixing in a small amount of plain cooked chicken, lean turkey, or canned pumpkin (plain, not pie filling), if appropriate for your dog's diet.
5. Avoid switching foods too often.
Frequently changing foods can teach some dogs to hold out for something "better."
6. Provide regular exercise.
A walk or play session before mealtime can help stimulate appetite.
7. Reduce stress.
Changes in the home, loud noises, or competition with other pets can make some dogs reluctant to eat.
8. Use puzzle feeders or food-dispensing toys.
Some dogs are more motivated to eat when mealtime is mentally engaging.
If your dog consistently eats enough to maintain a healthy weight, has normal energy, and your veterinarian has ruled out medical problems, they may simply have a lower appetite than other dogs.
