Home Remedies for Dandruff
Here are simple steps to help your scalp:
1. Use a gentle scalp-washing routine.
Wash your hair regularly to remove excess oil and dead skin.
Avoid using very harsh shampoos that leave your scalp dry or irritated.
Rinse shampoo thoroughly because leftover product can cause buildup.
2. Try coconut oil (for dry scalp).
Massage a small amount of coconut oil into the scalp.
Leave it for 20–60 minutes, then wash it out.
Avoid heavy oiling if your scalp is very oily, as it may worsen flakes for some people.
3. Aloe vera.
Apply pure aloe vera gel to the scalp.
Leave it for about 20–30 minutes before rinsing.
It may help soothe itching and irritation.
4. Reduce scalp irritation.
Avoid the following habits:
- Scratching your scalp with your nails
- Using too many hair products (gels, sprays, heavy creams)
- Frequent chemical treatments if your scalp is sensitive
5. Improve your scalp habits.
Brush gently to help remove loose flakes.
Keep combs, brushes, and pillowcases clean.
Manage stress and get enough sleep, as stress can worsen dandruff for some people.
6. Use anti-dandruff shampoo if needed.
For persistent dandruff, look for shampoos containing ingredients such as:
- Ketoconazole
- Zinc pyrithione
- Selenium sulfide
- Salicylic acid
- Coal tar
Follow the label instructions; many need to stay on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.
Be careful with these popular remedies:
Some people use lemon juice, vinegar, or baking soda on the scalp, but these can irritate or dry the skin, especially if used too often.
See a doctor or dermatologist if:
- Dandruff is severe or keeps returning despite treatment.
- Your scalp is very red, painful, or swollen.
- You have thick, greasy, yellowish scales.
- You notice hair loss or sores.
- The itching is intense.
